The thermostat is an important control in your home’s heating and cooling system. It is used to set the desired temperature or “setpoint”, the desired system (i.e. heating or cooling) and other settings in the home.

The thermostat is the control that tells your HVAC system when to turn on and at what rate to operate.

Traditional thermostats can be “round” or digital or even programmable, allowing you to change the temperature based on the time of day.

Newer “Smart” Thermostats and Learning Thermostats

“Smart thermostats” or “learning thermostats” like the Nest Learning Thermostat, or the Honeywell Lytic Smart Thermostat, take these controls to a new level.

While all thermostats allow you to adjust the temperature in your home, smart thermostats “learn” from your behaviors and can adjust themselves based on ambient conditions, like humidity. They also allow you to control the climate in your home remotely and show your energy consumption in real time. And, if you’re the techy type who loves gadgets and mobile apps, you can actively monitor and tweak you energy usage, and even analyze how much you could save by adjusting the temperature a few degrees here or there.
