Whole House Heating and Air Conditioning Efficiency – Check List
As much as 50% of the energy used in the home goes to heating and cooling! So making smart decisions about your home’s heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems can make a huge difference on the monthly utility costs. Let’s review ways to reduce those monthly bills.
1- Change air filters on a regular basis. This helps stop the restriction of air flow and lets the system work less hard thus saving energy. Change your filters monthly during the winter and summer seasons.
2- Tune up HVAC equipment yearly. Just like a car tune-up improves gas mileage, a yearly HVAC systems tune- up improves efficiency, prolongs equipment life and increases home comfort.
3- Install a programmable thermostat. Ideal for people who are out of the house for set periods throughout the week. Proper settings can save hundreds of dollars a year.
4- Seal your heating and cooling ducts. Home duct systems that move air from forced air furnaces, central air conditioners or heat pumps often waste – leak – heated or cooled air costing as much as 20% of the yearly cost. Concentrate on sealing ducting located in attics, unheated crawl spaces or garages. Double check the entire home for proper insulation levels.
5- Systems over 10 years of age should be evaluated by a professional HVAC contractor. Like ourselves, a professional fully trained team and can advise you about all the possible savings and installation concerns that should be addressed plus illustrate pay back periods for any money spent!
