Get Your Home Ready for the Fall & Winter Season
Fall is officially here, and with the winter just around the corner, it’s crucial to prepare your home for colder weather.
And, it has been predicted that this winter will be long and harsh, so you may be wondering: “what are the ways to prepare my home for fall and winter?”
We put together some winter home preparation tips to help keep your family safe and warm, lower your utility bills and protect your asset.
-
Tune Up Your Heating System
This is the time to get a professional in to inspect your furnace or heat pump to ensure the system is clean and in good condition, and that it can achieve its manufacturer-rated efficiency. Also, they will measure carbon-monoxide leakage.
Be proactive – act soon and ensure you’re all set before the coldest days of the year arrive! And, to avoid waiting as everyone else tries to get the service technicians in – have a UGI service contract and get priority service for breakdowns.
-
Consider an Upgrade
If your heating system is broken, or old and inefficient, fall is a great time to replace it.
Your HVAC contractors will make sure your new heating system is properly installed to make your home warm and cozy, but also to run more efficiently, which can save you from future costly repairs and help lower your energy bills.
-
Seal Air Leaks
Increase the efficiency of your heating system by sealing air leaks in your home.
Caulk around doors and windows, add or replace deteriorating weather stripping, seal around exterior electrical outlets and plumbing fixtures.
Eliminate leaks and enhance your heater’s performance by having professionals seal and insulate your ducts.
Proper insulation and sealing will help your HVAC system run much more efficiently and safely.
-
Check Your Thermostat
It’s wise to have a thermostat that you can program, since you will have better control of the temperature in your home, plus may save some energy money along the way.
Another thought – select and install a Wi-Fi enabled programmable thermostat, and then program it from your computer or mobile devices.
-
Check the Gutters and Outdoor Water Supplies
Have the drain line inspected to make sure it is not clogged.
Check and clean your gutters from debris, since water can back up against the house and cause damage to wood trim, roofing, and siding, as well as cause leaks and ice dams. If they are missing or damaged, have them repaired.
Disconnect all garden hoses and drain the remaining water in faucets – water in pipes can freeze, which will cause pipes to burst as the ice expands. If your home doesn’t have frost-proof faucets, turn off the shut-off valve inside your home.
Also, drain your lawn irrigation system, to avoid freezing and leaks in sprinkler-system pipes.
Test your sump pump by slowly pouring several gallons of water into the sump pit to see whether the pump turns on. Most sump pumps last about ten years, so check to make sure yours is still in good condition.
-
Clean Chimney and Vents
Before you start using your fireplace, or heating appliance burning gas, oil, wood or coal, see if chimney and vents are clean and in good condition, to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide from creeping into your home.
-
Stock Up On Winter Essentials
Get enough supplies of salt or ice melt now – don’t wait for the first winter storm to restock. Also, stock on the wood for a stove or fireplace, and make sure you keep it covered and dry. And, don’t forget to have your shovels or snow blower ready!
